According to a report in Korea Times, Samsung is working on a Google Glass competitor in the form of Galaxy Glass (tentative name). The smart heads-up display will reportedly be unveiled at this year’s IFA trade fair in Berlin.

Samsung has even registered a patent demonstrating the technology in South Korea. The device will connect with consumers’ smartphones and display alerts and other information on its translucent display. It will apparently allow users to take phone calls, play music and do other stuff, like Galaxy Gear, the smartwatch from Samsung.

Samsung Electronics is working with sister company Samsung Display to create the screen needed for Galaxy Glass.

“The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets,” said an unidentified official at Samsung.

If the Korea Times report is indeed accurate then Samsung’s Galaxy Glass will compete directly with Google Glass, which too is expected to reach mass market in the H2, 2014.
