  1. Open your Registy Editor by typing regedit in Run dialog and pressing Enter.
  2. Navigate to :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

    and search for HungAppTimeout and change its default value from 5000 to 1000 and click OK.

  3.  Scroll down to WaitToKillAppTimeout and edit its value from 20000 to 1000 then click OK. Don’t close Registry Editor yet.
  4. Now again navigate to :
    HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

    and change HungAppTimeout value to 1000 and click OK.

  5. Scroll down to WaitToKillAppTimeout change it to 1000 and click OK. Close your Registry Editor now.

Restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Now your Windows XP should shut down faster than earlier.
