Our model is working fantastically well. Ordinary people use Wikipedia and they like it, so they chip in some cash so it will continue to thrive.

About Wikipedia

Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. It is going to complete its 11 years. Wikipedia is the world’s largest online encyclopedia which is authored by volunteers all over the world. Wikipedia covers almost everything in every field such as business, technology, literature, history, science, personalities, movies, books, gadgets etc – almost everything you can think of.

Wikipedia is available in 282 languages. It contains above 20 million (over 3.83 million in English alone) articles which are readily available for anyone absolutely free. Quality of Wikipedia articles are very high with lots of citations and statistics.

These quality articles are compiled and regularly updated by more than 90,000 editors who volunteer to share and publish their in-depth research and knowledge.
Wikipedia is completely free from advertisements. It entirely depends upon worldwide-donations for its functioning.

Financial Issues

Wikipedia has become more authentic and influential source of information over the span of 11 years.

Editing software of Wikipedia has got outdated which has caused drop in total number of volunteer editors. By updating its editing software and mobile tools, and hiring more engineers Wikipedia targets to attract 200,000 editors and 50 million articles.
Wikimedia has doubts if it will be able to sustain huge costs in running Wikipedia entirely depending upon donations. It need huge amount of money for technology upgrades and its availability on internet-enabled mobile phones.

Wikimedia Foundation is based in San Francisco. In its fiscal year ending June 30, it is looking for a total revenue of USD $29.5 million. The revenue of the previous fiscal year was USD $25.
