Several news surfacing from Samsung’s homeland South Korea claim that the company is now looking forward to launch a variant of Gear 2 which will include SIM card slot for making voice calls from the watch itself rather than connecting and originating from compatible smartphones.
According to the Korean Herald, Samsung has partnered with country’s leading telco SK Telecom to release the wearable in Korea. The alleged Gear 2 will include a built-in SIM card or USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) to use it as a standalone mobile device.
There is still no official word from Samsung on this report, but a source closer to development has revealed that the device might be launched globally in coming days.
This is not the first time we’re hearing about a smartwatch with SIM card slot. Few years back, LG had released a watch phone with built-in SIM card slot and last year, a Chinese company Appscomm also showcased a smartwatch with a Mirasol display and a built-in micro SIM slot to make and receive phone calls and read or send text messages.
