If you love to work in the updated version of Microsoft Office Word i.e. MS Office Word 2007 and MS Office Word 2010, then you should know that by default, it always saves the word document file in .docx format.

It is a known fact that .docx files can only be opened in Microsoft Office 2007 or its more recent versions, while .doc can be opened in all versions.

There is absolutely no problem if you send these .docx document files to those who are using the same version of Microsoft office. The main problem occurs when you send these documents to your mates or co-workers who are still using Microsoft Office 2003 or older versions. Certainly, they will not be able to open the received documents from you in their Microsoft Office 2003.

To get rid of this problem, the best and easy solution is to change the default save option from .docx to .doc format. It will enable you to open those files even in Microsoft Office Word 2003 or in older version without any issues comfortably.

How to Make the Change?

Note that this tutorial is for you only if you are using Microsoft Office 2007 or its more recent version. If you have older version then this tutorial is not for you.

To make the change proceed in the following way :

  1. Open your Microsoft Office and click on the Office Button or File Button in the upper left hand corner and select Word Options.
