You will have seen Thumbs.db file often in your image folder. But do you know what is Thumbs.db and why does they always appear in the folder where images are stored? Actually Thumbs.db is a thumbnail cache which stores thumbnail images for Windows Explorer’s thumbnail view. This speeds up the display of images as the smaller images do not need to be recalculated every time the user views the folder.

Needless to say that like others, it also consumes your disk’s space. Although this file is very small but if you have lots of Thumbs.db files on your drive removing them will help you to save some valuable disk space.

How to disable Thumbs.db?

As far as Windows 7 is concerned, removal process of Thumbs.db is a little bit different from Widows XP. To disable Thumbs.db in Windows 7 just follow the below mentioned procedures :

  1. Open Run dialog and type gpedit.msc and press Enter. Then Local Group Policy Editor window will open.

  2. Look for User Configuration and expand it. Then click on Administrative Templates and under Window Component click on Window Explorer item.
  3. Find the setting “Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files”.

  4. Now double click on that and check the Enable radio button and press Apply and OK. That’s it. 😆 😆

Now after closing Local Group Policy Editor all those annoying Thumbs.db files will disappear and no Thumbs.db will be generated afterwards.
