This is the first time ever Samsung has admitted that it is working on smart watch like devices, although the romours about the smart watch have been airing online from long time.
This is what Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business said to the Bloomberg:
We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.
However he didn’t reveal any detail about the alleged device apart from the confirmation, but we all know the supposed details of the device a little bit via rumors. As per the rumours, Samsung’s smart watch will be dubbed as Galaxy Altius and run on modified version of Android. The watch will feature music play, clock and email apps among others.
It’s also worth remembering that Apple is also busy in developing similar kind of device called iWatch, which is being developed by a team of 100 product engineers and is said to be able to perform similar functions to the iPhone and iPad.
It will be interesting to see who launches the smart watch first in the watch market, which is expected to generate more than $60 billion in sales this year. The company launching the smart watch first in the market, will certainly attract customers into their platform, boosting sales of phones, tablets and TVs.
For Samsung, making a watch is not a new experience. In the past, company had launched a watch phone, followed by a touch screen watch featuring Bluetooth support and Outlook email syncing.
