Today’s is the age of mobiles and smartphones where sending messages is as easy as touch of the screen or a click. But that was not easy in ancient times. People used smoke to convey various signals.
The evolution of SMS actually began with Morse Code invented by Samuel Finley Breese Morse. That was a method to convert a text into electrical signals using dots and dashes.
It was December 3, 1992 when first actual SMS was sent by Neil Papworth of then Sema Group (now Mavenir Systems) using a PC over the Vodafone GSM Network in UK. At the other end, the message was received by Richard Jarvis of Vodafone on an Orbitel 901 Handset. The SMS was “Merry Christmas“.
Several improvements have been made through these 20 years. Now, it has became our everyday practice to send and receive text messages. This infographic is meant to learn more about SMS and its evolution and history when it has turned 20 years old.
