Consider a situation when you have an urgent work to do but unfortunately your mouse refused to work. It happens due to inability of computer to recognize the mouse, as the driver got corrupted or some other problem. The work to be done is indeed urgent and there is no any extra mouse in your compartment. Then what will you do in this situation?

Keyboard Alternative of Mouse

There is a window utility available called MouseEmu, which emulate mouse movements as well as clicks via the keyboard. It’s a free utility of around 10 KB that allow you to control the movement of mouse pointer using keyboard.

After downloading, just run the program, and it will show you which keys you have to press to move the mouse cursor (see screenshot in the right). For instance – 8 for mouse-up, 5 for mouse-down, 4 for mouse-left and 6 for mouse-right. Numpad Keys 1,2 and 3 serve up as Left-Click, Right-Click and Scroll-Click respectively. Numpad 7 and 9 are used to scroll up and down (NumLock must be ON). You can exit Mouse Emulator by right clicking on the mouse icon in the taskbar.

This program is also very useful for laptop owners with low quality mouse. Just hold down the Fn key, and you can use the numeric keypad in the center of your keyboard to move the mouse. Mouse Emulator can also toggle mouse buttons with a simple key press. This is very useful for RSI users that have problems in drag operations with the mouse.
