After maintaining the top position of world’s bestselling smartphone for almost 2 years, Apple lost its top spot in Q3 this year and slipped down in 2nd position in global smartphone shipment chart. The first position is now acquired by Samsung Galaxy S III with 18 millions units sales, compared with iPhone 4S sales of 16.2 millions. In Q2, Samsung sold just 5.4 millions of Galaxy S III units while Apple shipped 19.4 millions units of iPhone 4S worldwide.
This drastic increase in sales of Galaxy S III probably came due to its a large 4.8-inch touchscreen display and comparatively lower price than Apple iPhone 4S, which helped Samsung post a record $7.3 billion operating profit in the July-September quarter.
However according to some Strategy Analytics predictions, Samsung Galaxy III will not be able to hold on the top spot during the current quarter and will be replaced by Apple iPhone 5. Apple has already shipped 6 million units in Q3 before the launch in India. The iPhone 5 has got its India launch on 8th November and all the units were sold in just 24 hours.
