IIT-Kanpur : The Single Institue to Reject Current Proposal of HRD Ministry
Unhappy with “one-nation one-test” proposal of Kapil Sibal IIT-Kanpur has taken a revolutionary step and parted its way from JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) conducted for the admission in Prestigious IITs in the country. The institute has decided to take its own entrance examination from next academic year. The institute has refused IIT council’s proposal of a CET (Common Entrance Test) for all centrally-funded engineering institutes and announced its own examination. This decision has been taken in IIT-Kanpur’s special senate meeting attended by around 80 members.
According to Senate of IIT-Kanpur :
The recent IIT Council proposal on admissions to IITs is “academically and methodically” unsound and in violation of the Institutes of Technology Act (1961) and IIT Kanpur Ordinances (Ordinance 3.2 (Admissions).
The decision of single entrance examination for all centrally-funded institutes like IITs, NITs, and IIITs was taken few days before by the Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal and the proposal was approved unanimously at the IIT Council meeting.
Commenting on this step of IIT-Kanpur, Kapil Sibal said:
The IIT-Kanpur is likely to conduct on its own the entrance examination from 2013 for admission in undergraduate programs and syllabi along with admission procedures are yet to be declared. However admission in remaining all IITs, NITs and IIITs will still be after qualifying common entrance examination proposed by HRD Ministery.
